Our mission and vision

We aim to champion affordable and accessible healthcare by promoting generics and supporting the development of the South African pharmaceutical manufacturing industry as a national asset. We also aim to improve efficiency of the regulatory system which will in turn help speed up the registration of drugs.

Our objectives

  • To promote the use of generics
  • Strengthen the NAPM Membership
  • Develop the local pharmaceutical industry as a whole
  • To be the voice of the pharmaceutical industry in South Africa

Promote the Use of Generics

The objective is to increase market share to 25% in the next two to three years, reduce the registration time of new generics and increase the number of new registrations.

The NAPM, through its Technical Committee, works closely with the government, the MCC and the ITG. With the aim of improving the efficiency of the regulatory system and speed up the registration of drugs.

Develop the Local Pharmaceutical Industry as a whole

By promoting the use of generics as quickly as possible after patent expiry, the NAPM would be encouraging innovation in pharmaceuticals by multi-national manu-facturers in their research and development and clinical trials activities. In this way a greater number of medicines and/or new technologies in treatment will be produced. This in turn will create more scope for new generics in the long term. The end result should be a vibrant local pharmaceutical industry in line with developed countries but at the same time taking into account the needs of majority of the people in our country.

Strengthen the Membership

The level of funding from members determines how much the NAPM can do. Although we have a membership of 20 members, there is still opportunity for other members to join the association. And the NAPM would like to upgrade the category of member-ship to raise additional funds.

Another option under consideration is the introduction of an associate membership category for other stakeholders such as providers and government bodies.

Being the Voice of the Pharmaceutical Industry

The NAPM is an authority on pharmaceuticals and would like to be recognised as the voice of the South African industry. The NAPM would prefer to serve the industry through a non-confrontational stance. Its policy of co-operation and constructive engagement has enabled it to maintain a good relationship with the government in the past. This places the NAPM in a good position to work with the government and influence future drug strategy that should have long-term benefits for its members and the industry.

In line with this strategy, the NAPM aims to build a profile of being informative yet approachable to encourage the press to contact them first where pharmaceutical issues are concerned. During recent years, the NAPM has made its mark among its stakeholders because it has been more proactive on behalf of its members. As a result, representatives are regularly invited to speak or attend seminars and conferences on healthcare.
